we took our first real venture into the park
going up the inside road
and back on the outside road.
there is still ALOT of snow up there.
the roads are dry,
but there are only a few turnouts to stop in.
inside road
tree
jenny lake - frozen
jackson lake - frozen
jackson lake - land meets water, all under ice & snow
john
jackson lake at dam - only fresh water to be found
trees in snow
snake river at oxbow bend with range in background
.
As the song says... Well, we're on our way. We don't know where we're going. We're on our way. We are taking our time. But we don't know where...

saturday april 30, 2011
we took a short drive into the park
with lee and alycyn,
our old neighbors and friends from last year.
first stop was in gros ventre campground
to see if the owls are back nesting in the tree.
doesn't look like they are.
they probably got tired of everyone bothering them last year.
we will keep an eye out for them when we move in.
hopefully, they are still somewhere in the campground
where we can enjoy watching the babies grow.
we did see quite a bit of the elk from the refuge
starting out on their migration north for the summer
this group was trying to work up the nerve
to cross the road.
everytime it looked like they were going to make a run for it,
a car would drive by and spook them again.
next stop was at the moose ponds
on moose-wilson road.
we were excited to find
this mom
and baby
enjoying some quiet time before the
herd of tourists show up next month.

hello again
thursday april 28, 2011
we woke to find the herd
that was at the pond last night
had moved to the hill behind us.
this is looking out our front door.
there were a couple on the other side of the trailer
that were so close
i probably could have reached out the window
and scratched their backs.
.
after dinner treat
wednesday april 27 2011
.
after dinner we peeked out the door
to find these guys
hanging out at the pond.
.
first day of work
tuesday april 26, 2011
just as we did last year,
on our first day of work
we woke up to snow on the ground.
looking out the front door
herd of elk with buildings from edge of town behind them
snow covered hills and pond
two ducks in pond
elk traveling single file along the side of the hill
looking thru window while driving along dirt road to town
looking back at hill from main highway
snow along side of road - notice sign barely visible on left side of picture
ice covered bridge over snake river
by the time we got home
the snow was gone
and the animals were out and about
i don't know what is up with this poor guy's antlers
end of the day

the local hospital sits on the edge of the refuge
what a wonderful thing for patients to be able to see while they healing
this poor guy did not survive the harsh winter
trumpeter swan
barely saw this guy while he was passing by behind the trailer
end of the day

home home on the range
where the elk and the big horn sheep play
where seldom is heardanother human's spoken word
and the skies are both sunny and cloudy in one day
monday april 25, 2011
we pulled into our temporary site
on the national elk refuge
which sits between jackson, wyoming
and grand teton national parkwe are way around on the back side
just on the other side of the house in the distance.the house is called the miller house and
is a small museum/historical location.
it is not open yet.
the dirt road runs along the back of us
and we do get joggers, walkers, and people driving by.
but we are the only people who live out here
it is truly an awesome place to be.
the weather changes constantly,
from cold wind to sun to snow to rain
and then it starts all over again.
we set up in the middle of a small snow shower
which did not last long and
the snow was gone with an hour.
we tried to introduce ourselves to the neighbors,
but they were not too impressed by us.
