November 2011 part 2

once we finally arrived

at jeremy's and courtney's house

we had a great time

hanging out with adelyn

and helping with chores

and visiting with the animals.

one afternoon john and i

took adelyn across the street

into the apple orchard.

it didn't last long,

since we somehow managed

to find the only spot that

had dog poop

and adelyn promptly

stepped in it.

it was fun while it lasted.

jeremy's house sits right in the

middle of orchards and vineyards.

everywhere you look from their house

you see trees and vines.

past the orchard that is across the street,

is a canal filled with cattails

and a view of the hills beyond.

even crossing the river you get a great view

the sunsets from their front porch

are spectacular.

heading out for higher ground

every spring the elk leave
the national elk refuge in jackson, wy.

they spend late fall and all of winter
on the refuge where they are fed and protected.

since there was an early spring this year,
most of the thousands of elk had already left
the refuge and migrated north by the time we got here.

all last week, we were so very lucky to have been able to see the last of the herds as they left the refuge and migrated north to their summer feeding grounds.

after work while it was still light,
we could see them hiding back in the trees as we
drove down the road to get to the campground.

mornings were the best.

sometimes, they would be walking one behind the other

and other times, they would be in large groups grazing.

i remember last year when the winter had been the worst in years,

most of the elk had to wait longer than usual to start their annual trek.

we came into our "neighborhood" and between our road and the river

there was a large herd of elk back in the treeline

quietly walking in one long line.

i wish i had been able to take a picture of that scene.

it is hard to describe the feeling of seeing something

so peaceful and beautiful

that has been going on for hundreds, maybe thousands, of years.

to see these beautiful animals probably walking the same path

their ancestors have walked.

to wonder how they know exactly when to leave

and head north,

and when to start the long walk south

back to the refuge.

we did not see any elk this morning,

so i assume they are all pretty much past us by now.

now we just have to wait for fall,

when we will again be so very lucky to see them

slowly walking one behind the other back home.

we wish them safe travels.

november 2011

a few days after halloween
we went into our storage unit
and found all of jeremy's and jamie's
bins plus a few extra things we probably wont use
for awhile for jeremy's new house.
we loaded up the truck
and headed north to washington.
after a quick visit in turlock, ca
with elaine, doug, ethan, and erin
(john's sister and her family)
we were back on the road.
unfortunately, it didn't last too long.
just north of sacramento,
we started smelling something pretty nasty.
then a small beep went off on the dashboard
and john watched the needle on the battery meter
drop down.

we were lucky to come upon a rest stop as all
this was happening.
we were not lucky to have had our battery explode.

when john lifted the hood, we thought the radiator was spitting water and hissing
imagine our horror when we realized it was the battery spitting battery acid.

we enjoyed the scenery while we waited

thank goodness for automobile club, an honest towtruck driver,
and a couple of great workers in a local napa auto parts garage.
it only took a few hours to replace the battery
and check the electrical system
and we were back on the road.
all that extra time did put us behind schedule,
so after spending the night in redding, ca
we headed out thru the back roads of northern calif.

there had been a snowstorm pass thru the night before
and the roads were a bit icy, but the skies were clear for us.

i think that is mt shasta underneath the cloud

morning sun on grass

we raced a train for a few miles.
                                                                   the train won.

one of many huge dams on columbia river

after an exploding battery, stormy weather and
heavy heavy winds along the oregon/washington border
we finally made it to pasco, washington
and a little girl who had been waiting patiently for her grandpa.
